Locke had been in a rather pleasant mood, ever since he had returned from his parents house. He only spent a few days, before feeling that he would have to go back, especially once he heard of the Academy's new announcement. He'd probably return to the Academy, after all, it was the only place he was going to grow and mature.
Still though, he should at least talk it over with...his friends? Was that even the right word? Kiri was of course, and so much more, but what about Morgan and Garion and that Matt kid that nobody really got to know. He lapsed back into thinking about his confinement now and again, but mostly he was able to focus on the fact of the new puzzles before him and throw it from his mind.
Why was she like him?
What was the significance of that name?
And why didn't they seem surprised?
He was so lost deep in thought as he sat in one of the dens chairs that he probably wouldn't have noticed in a book flew at his head...

It had been going so well. So freaking well. Garion had been spending every waking minute trying desperately to keep items from spontaneously deciding to ignore the laws of physics, and othing had flown out of his grasp for two days, a record for him. He had been very careful, going so far as to lock his door at night when he was sleeping, when he could not control his power in the slightest.
He refused to display any sign of Telekinesis, fearing that someone might get hurt, or worse.
And now, his record streak was broken, just because he was reading an interesting book.
The kind of thought provoking book that leads you to forget any sign of outside life around you.
The kind of book that would allow a certain young boy to forget about a certain power, which would cause that certian book at a certain cat-eared genius.
"LOCKE! Watch out!" Garion realized about a second too late that he could probably stop the volume, and the only way it would have been avoided was if Locke dodged it.
"Locke... Oh my god, sorry! Sorrysorrysorrysorry! The book... uh..." Dozens of excuses bounced around in Garion's head, each one more ridiculous and elaborate than the last. He was doing a practical physics experiment? A study of human behavior? Disagreed violently with the book? Measuring friction of an airborne object?
"Slipped."

Sure enough, a flying book was good enough to snap Locke out of his train of though. As the spine collided with his head with a sharp crack, he fell to the ground a little stunned. The force of it had knocked him off balance, but it wasn't anything major. He heard Garion's voice from behind him, and theorized it was probably him.
"Owww....Be more careful." Locke said, rubbing his head. "You must be rusty with your telekinesis, haven't been using it a lot. If you don't use it, you're gonna lose it, right?" He said, wincing as he felt the growing bump on the back of his skull.
Wait a minute...? "Slipped?" Locke echoed. "Were you juggling it or something? That book was moving way too fast for it to have just slipped. You know they have tennis balls and a large yard for practicing things like that."
Locke bent down and picked the book up, handing it back to Garion.
"Interesting book?"

Garion winced as the hardcover cracked against Locke's skull, and quickly rushed over to see if there was any damage done to the vast database contained inside it. A quick check told him nothing was wrong, the news of which prompted a sigh of relief from Garion. He definitely didn't want to have to explain to anyone why Locke was suddenly an idiot.
Rusty with his telekinesis? What a perfect excuse laid out for him. What Locke said next completely ruined the effect however. Locke was putting him in a tight spot. He could either say that his telekinesis was not out of control and have to come up with an excuse on his own, or say it was out of control. But then he would have to use it more so he doesn't arouse suspicion...
He took the book, nodding to affirm, that it was an interesting book, then said delicately. "Erm... Locke? Can I ask you something? It's kind of personal... so don't tell the others, okay?"

Locke arched an eyebrow at Garion's question. "Shoot." He replied. "And as far as secrets...are you asking the genetic wild-card who has to leave the house in disguise to even visit him family to keep secrets?" He said with a grin, he'd found the best way to deal with such things was to make light of them, at least with people whose company he enjoyed.
And this did seem to be a bit of a change from how Garion had been lately, certainly an improvement. Locke had his guess though.
"Let me guess, your telekinesis has improved and you have trouble maintaining fine control of it right? Not surprising, it's rather common after..."
Periods of emotional stress or extreme need? No he wasn't going to say that.
"..all. Yes, rather common after all." He finished awkwardly.

Garion didn't even smile at Locke's comparison. His face was completely straight, and all humor was gone from his mind. Imagine waking up one day to find that your legs would sometimes move in their own, without your control. That's how scary this was for Garion; his powers were more than just a convenience. They were a part of him, a need. To not be in control of that was frustration beyond what you can believe.
"It's not just fine control! It's everything! Things float in mid air without me wanting them to. Whenever I pick up anything I crush it! And now I'm hurting people with it! It's a book today, but can't you see... Today a book, tomorrow a bookshelf! You can't tell me this is common, that it's normal."
Tears started welling up in his eyes. "I don't know what to do, Locke. I don't know what can help. I thought.... I thought that after we escaped from that place I wouldn't have to live in fear anymore."
"I was wrong."

Locke was taken aback by Garion's explosion. Ok, so this made a slight bit of sense now. His powers were out of control, that was a simple enough problem. Tough solution though, especially for one who'd been through what he had. As Locke had read, people in such emotional situations that had power fluctuations were rarely able to control it until they had come to terms with what happened. The power memory in their brain was linked to the trauma, so it was impossible to control until they could learn to deal with the problem.
Didn't look like that was going to happen for Garion any time soon, the problems just added to the trauma and frustration. But he was panicking, and that wasn't good at all.
"First step." Locke said, ticking off on his fingers. "Calm down, deep breaths. Hyper Ventilating isn't going to help you." Locke herd something sliding off to the side and reacted quickly. A metal lamp flying across the room stopped, held in a magnetic field.
"CALM Garion." Locke said, stronger this time. "Relax yourself, calm down. You aren't going to cause any trouble now that I'm aware of it. But let's work through it. I can imagine your body spawned it when you had need of it, so time is obvious, but you can't control it. So we need to do one of two things, find a way to control it, or find a way to reduce it to a level you can control."
He explained it slowly, and calmly. "Do you understand what I am saying?"
He was trying to not freak Garion out, but that wasn't really his suit. If anything, he would know that as long as Locke was aware of the danger, he wasn't going to whack him again.

Garion's face was beet red, frustration and helplessness overcoming him. His breathing quickened as he became more upset. His voice bomed louder. "I CAN'T! I CAN'T CALM DOWN!"
"I CAN'T CONTROL ANYTHING LOCKE! EVERYTHING! I'M GONG TO RUIN EVERYTHING!"
" LOCKE I CAN'T DO IT! I CAN'T! I'M NOT..." a chair whizzed through the air towards the bot of them, and Garion didn't even bother stopping it but deflected it off to the side, sending pieces of chair crashing to the floor.
Garion took a deep, shuddering breath in.
"I... sorry. I'm getting too... I understand what you said. I'll try to... try to work with you"
Garion took another shuddering breath. Locke was trying to help, and he wasn't making it easy for him. He wanted desperately to prove to Locke that he was mature, that he was on Locke's level, but he wasn't doing a very good job.

It took a lot of focus to not be thrown back from Garion's outburst, like an invisible hand pushed him. That was definitely a telekinetic force, but Garion didn't even seem to be aware of it.
More broken objects to add to the collection, it's a good thing these particular Cavan's were wealthy, or Garion might have been causing some real trouble! Instead, Locke got an idea.
"Get a coat Garion, we're going outside where experimentation won't put holes in the wall."
Locke looked outside, it was early March so there was still a small amount of snow on the ground. Only a few inches, but enough for what he needed. Perfect.
"We're going to test this, and in a way that won't destroy anything or hurt anyone. I'll find out a way to fix this, after all, I'm the best the Academy has to offer." Locke said with a grin. He left for the foyer and slipped his sweater on, opening the front door to look outside.
He picked up a scoop of snow in his white gloved hand and smirked. This would work, this would work well.

Garion ignored the recommendation of getting a coat, and walked outside into the chilly March afternoon. He was still taking deep, calming breaths, and the frost bit at the back of his throat. Despite that, he was happy to be out in the snow. Snow was slightly difficult to grip, and it blanketed rocks and other would-be projectiles.
He was happy that Locke was taking this in stride, however. He was being his same old, slightly arrogant self, and the fact that he hadn't changed gave Garion a stable object in a whirlwind of uncertainty that was his life.
"What do you have planned, oh wise teacher." he attempted at a joke.

"Hmph." Locke remarked, grabbing a fistful of snow. "It's quite simple really. I need to determine first of all where the problem lies. With the power itself, or with the magnitude of the power, and there are only a few safe ways to do that." He said, turning the snow ball over in his hand.
"So, tell me, has it been happening when you try to use your power, or just when you get distracted? Is it a uniform change or is it case by case basis? Does it seem to-"
In the middle of this sentence he spun around and winged the snow at Garion. A display of power would be worth more then a thousand words here.
Hopefully Garion wouldn't make the light layer of snow on the ground burst into flames.

Garion was listening so intently on what Locke was saying that there was no way to see the snowball flying until it was a foot away from his face. He had no time to think,he only pushed. The resulting force was very much like a breaking the sound barrier. The snowball suddenly exploded in mid air, it's own inertia working against it
The burst was powerful, but quick. Garion quickly regained himself and cut the flow of telekenetic power. The ground two feet in front of him was bare, the snow piled up where the bald patch ended.
"Safe?" he questioned sardonically.

The unfortunate part about snow, is that it isn't really solid when you apply force to it. It's like putting a fan by a dusty shelf, it doesn't all neatly wind up at the end.
And this lesson was displayed by a face full of snow crashing into Locke. True enough he'd expected something like that, but still it was a little surprising. As he wiped the snow from his face and off of his clothes and began to speak again.
"Ok, it's obvious the activation is working all right, but the magnitude is all screwed up. That much force though, that was impressive. As I recall." Locke said, finding more and more flakes of snow to brush off himself.
"Telekinesis uses the users Physical strength, but converts it into a mental strength. So something happened to increase your mental strength, or your physical strength."
Considering it further he finally was satisfied he had removed most of the snow. "So, as is evident from earlier, your powers have been activating unwillingly as well, when you aren't focusing on them?" That made sense, and Locke recalled the day his Electro-kinesis manifested, and how difficult it had made life. "This reminds me of a new power developing, but you are already Telekinetic, so that doesn't make sense that it would increase by such a degree that you would be unable to control it. As odd as this is to ask, have you noticed anything different?"
As if to elaborate. "I mean besides this." Yeah, because that helped at all.

Garion didn't even bother apologizing to Locke for the slam in the face. He was smart enough to figure out that it was accidental. Locke spoke again as if nothing had happened, and that's how Garion acted.
Now they were getting into power theory; really juicy stuff. Even better, the focus was telekinesis. Garion squinted in concentration, thinking along with Locke. What he said seemed to make sense. If his power had evolved into a more powerful phase, then it should stand to reason that he would have some degree of control. Garion squinted at Locke. "Too many things have been different lately to pick out one instance and apply it to now. Let's see if logic and a little speculation gets us anywhere." He started ticking things off with his fingers.
"We know that if my power had simply developed, then, then I would have some degree of control over it, yes? Instead, only the strength of my power increased."
"We also know that for my telekinetic strength to increase, my physical strength must have increased. Do I make sense so far?" Garion asked Locke, double checking for flaws in his reasoning.
