She parked the little yellow Fiat in the parking lot, locking it from afar so it beeped twice. She shared a private smile with herself as she walked across the lot to the small coffee establishment, cute summer heels clicking against the cement. Aside from the color she usually avoided having in her wardrobe, there was also something else that was very different about the girl.
She was red. She had on a simple off-white shirt and a brown and purple printed skirt with a thick brown leather belt at the waist, classically stylish and of course specially for summer. Her fiery new hair was interrupted by her sunglasses being pushed up off her eyes. When she reached the front door, she pulled it open and slung her purse over her shoulder at the same time.
Stepping into the shop was a contrast she wasn't ready for. The air conditioning in comparison to the heat outside made her shiver upon contact, and the gush of cold when the door shut behind her made her squeak. She was so ready for a steaming cup of French Vanilla.
As she clutched her arms and glanced up at the menu, she noticed someone who was so familiar. His name didn't pop into her head right away, but she was trying to get her frozen brain to remember where she knew him from. Rubbing her arms and hoping the friction would create some heat, and when she line moved forward and she got closer to his table, Skye very boldly greeted him.
"Don't you owe me coffee?"

There were so many things about girls that Tristan would never understand, like why they all had so many purses when they could only use one of them at a time or how they ‘oooh’ed and ‘ahhh’ed and practically melted over even the ugliest of puppies. Another thing that he just couldn’t comprehend about women was their universal love for coffee shops.
He had received a cryptic text from Amanda, his brother’s fiancé, a little after lunch time telling him to meet her at some coffee shop in Hoboken. He figured that it was important so he didn’t ask any questions and left the house with enough time to get there by 1:30 like his future sister-in-law asked him to. After she arrived (ten minutes late, of course), she proceeded to tell Tristan that she had no clue what to buy his brother for his birthday that was coming up soon and that she really really really needed his help in figuring out what to get him. He couldn’t believe that she dragged him all the way out to the stupid coffee shop for a secret meeting. “Amanda, you do know that I live right down the street from you, right? Or that you could have just asked me over the phone?”
But he had learned to love Amanda and all her quirks over the last year, and he even found her desperate attempt to find the perfect gift for Lucas humorous. They chatted for a half hour before Amanda needed to get back to work. Tristan was just about to leave as well, but as started to scoot his chair out from under the table, he was approached by the girl he had accidentally dumped snow on last winter.
“Uh, hey,” he greeted, a look of guilt slowly taking over. “I swear I wasn’t blowing you off or anything. I just lost your number and I didn’t know how to contact you.”
And it was the truth. After Tristan had covered the girl with snow he had felt awful and promised to make it up to her. He went to call her that night only to find that the phone number she had scribbled down was nowhere to be found. That was months ago, and Tristan really didn’t think that he would ever see her again, which lead him to believe that she probably thought that he was some insensitive asshole.

Skye wasn't accustomed to rejection, or to being ignored. Besides, Tristan had seemed like a good guy when she met him, despite how they had met, and she believed him when he told her that he lost her number. However, trusting him wouldn't make this any easier on him. So, nodding, with a comical curl to her lip, Skye replied.
"Mhmm. Are you going to do something to fix this?" Her Italian accent and the way she raised one eyebrow and leaned her weight on one hip made her appear unimpressed and expectant. Skye looked over her shoulder at the menu, as though she might have something better to do, only to realize someone took her place in line.
Oh well, she was determined to get Tristan to ask for her number and buy her coffee, so she didn't have to worry about the line. She liked the boy; he was sweet and inarguably attractive. She wanted to know more about him, and what better opportunity to do this than a conversation over coffee?

Well this girl didn’t hold much subtlety, did she?
There was once a time when Tristan would have been absolutely freaked out by her forwardness. Until his final year of school, he had been the quiet kid who was too shy to talk to anyone, especially girls. He only had a few friends and had been labeled by his second-oldest brother, the world’s most outgoing guy, as ‘too socially awkward to be in public’. But then he met the girl who would soon become his best friend and then other girl who would soon become his girlfriend, and they both instilled a sense of confidence in him that slowly began to grow.
“Um, yeah. Sure,” Tristan answered. Like the gentleman he had grown up to be in the last three years, he stood up and offered Skye his seat, even though there was a perfectly functioning empty chair across the table from him. “It’s Skye, right? Let me get you something.” He gestured toward the counter and the busy baristas behind it.

The slightly annoyed expression dissolved into a fantastic smile, and she gracefully took the seat he offered her. She nodded to acknowledge that he got her name right, but when he suggested he get something, she peeked at the long line-up and shook her head.
"You wait for there to be shorter," Skye said, not really wanting to wait by herself in the booth to wait for him. They could chat and when the line wasn't so long, he could go get them coffee then. The Italian girl gestured to the seat across from her in invitation.
"Sit, sit!" As if her hand gently flowing across from her wasn't enough of a hint, "We talk now, okay?" Her face lit up in a brilliant smile.
"Coffee here, hmm?" Skye poked, "I thought you have your own coffee store?"

As Skye smiled, Tristan loosened up. Apparently she didn’t think that he was the insensitive asshole he feared she would think he was, which was a huge relief. He hadn’t planned on staying at the coffee shop after Amanda left, but he did dump snow on Skye, promised to call her to make it up to her, and then accidentally blew her off. The least he could do was sit and talk with the girl for a while. Tristan nodded and sat down across from Skye as instructed.
“My own coffee store?” he questioned, wondering where she’d get that idea. He could hardly work the plain old coffee pot at the Why Not Diner, none the less one of those latte cappuccino espresso mocha extra foam whatever the hell they were machines in places like the one they were seated in. Then it hit him. “Oh, no, you’re talking about the diner. No, it’s my mom’s place really. I just did all the rebuilding and stuff. When you were there it wasn’t finished obviously, but it’s all done now. We finally opened about a month ago.”
He thought back briefly to the first and last time that he saw the girl sitting across from him. He had been shoveling snow off the roof of the under-construction Why Not Diner, not paying attention to where he was tossing the unwanted frozen mess. Unfortunately he discarded a huge shovelful off the roof and right onto Skye, who had been innocently passing by on the sidewalk, already freezing enough.
“I’m still really sorry about the whole snow thing. And about not calling you,” he apologized again, completely genuine. “But that was back in Missouri, so I’m guessing you moved with the school? Are you a student?”

"Your mother's diner," Skye repeated, nodding as it made more sense to her. The girl pushed her red hair over her shoulder and tapped a little rhythmless beat on the table with her fingertips. She was trying to put the English words together in her head before she spoke them, but Tristan talked again. Apologizing. Weren't they over that already.
She waved her hand in dismissal; it was no longer winter, therefore no longer freezing, and she had every confidence that it wasn't going to happen again. She nodded to confirm his assumption and added, "Yes. I moved with the school. I just get there and they move to new state! Sooo not fun. My car was in Missouri, and I had to call the car people to drive it here. Not fun," she repeated, shaking her head animatedly.
She was much more articulate since the last time Tristan saw her; the girl had plenty of practice talking and getting accustomed to American terminology. She was an expert in 'bullshit' now, thanks to Noah, as well as some other native slang.
"You are not a student, are you?" She was puzzled as she tried to figure this out. Why was he here then, if he hadn't moved with the school? Was he actually still studying there, with a schedule that kept him forever out of her own? Her brows twisted in troubled thought as she tried to make sense of it all.

Tristan was amused by her not-so-perfect English. He definitely wasn’t the most worldly or well-traveled person among his group of friends, but if he had to guess where Skye was from, he’d be right on the money in guessing Italy. It helped when your best friend hailed from the same place.
“No, I graduated two years ago,” he explained. He knew what she was thinking, and it make sense to wonder why he was here in Washington if he no longer attended The Academy. “Most of the uh… Gifted community tends to center around The Academy. If it moves, a lot of people follow it. It’s kind of a security blanket or something, knowing that there agents around and stuff. People like us tend to stick together and flock toward each other I guess.”
He had known about Skye’s gift before he even met her. On the fateful snow-shoveling day, she had projected an image of herself on the roof in an attempt to scare away what she thought was a raccoon knocking snow down on her, only to discover that Tristan was the accidental culprit, not some furry overgrown squirrel.
Tristan leaned back in his chair, its two front legs coming off the ground. He looked comfortable, despite the fact that the pretty girl across from him had just called him out on ignoring her for months.
“So you’re obviously not from around here,” Tristan stated, pointing out the obvious. “Italian, right?”

She listened to him clarify everything; not being a student and why he was in the area. She nodded, deciding that it made sense, but she joked about it anyway.
"I thought maybe I have stalker," Skye laughed lightly to show she wasn't being serious, "You don't call and instead you follow me here."
Her carefree smile and bright eyes sparkled with her good mood, and his inquiry made her light up even more.
"Si!! I am Italian, how do you know?" Italian accents weren't all that hard to place, and Skye was completely aware of the way she sounded in comparison to the English-speaking Americans. In Italy they taught English with British pronunciation, and Skye found the twang of American speech less appealing than the chipper flow of the United Kingdom. So not only did she divert from a common American accent, but her 'British' was lightly tainted with Italy's beautiful slur. Although... they probably didn't use terms like 'bullshit' in Great Britain as they did in New York.
