Matt Ambrose was an average 12-year-old boy. He went to school, as boys did, and got pretty good grades. He had a few friends, and some enemies. He had a normal family, two parents and a younger sister. There was absolutely nothing extraordinary about him at all.
Well, there was nothing extraordinary about him, until he accidentally set those bullies on fire the other day. And now, here he was, clad in a warm brown hoodie and loose jeans, a duffle bag on his shoulder and a suitcase in his hand.
He always wished that something, anything would make his life exciting. Now, he was wandering through the Academy, a school full of people with extraordinary talents! He had an extraordinary talent! It was like he'd walked into a video game or something!
"You mean I'm a pyro? And I've been this way all my life?!" The boy chattered excitedly, drinking in all his surroundings with wide eyes.
"Well..." The wiry brunette agent who was leading the very excited Matt Ambrose through the corridors started uncertainly. He wasn't sure what to make of the boy's reaction; some of the kids were thrilled when they found out, and others, horrified. He'd dealt with both, and the latter cases were always more difficult to work with. Why, one time, he'd had a girl who was convinced that she was a chameleon because she was suffering a punishment from God.
Thankfully, his uncertainty wouldn't last long.
"THIS IS SO COOL! It sure took them long enough, though! Man, just imagine, if I had these powers all along!"
He took the opportunity to consider how his life would have been if had developed his powers at a young age. Sally would like him, definitely! She'd be dazzled by his special skill! How many people could say 'My boyfriend can throw fire," anyway? And those bullies! Why, they'd never mess with him! In fact, they'd never mess with anyone, not on his watch!
"So this place is like a school for people with superpowers?! Like the X-men school? Like Hogwarts? Is there a Magneto or a Voldemort or something, whose butt we're all gonna kick?! Does everyone have a superpower here?! What's your superpower? How many are there? Can you learn more? Can you show me how to control mine better? Do we have codenames and stuff? I was thinking maybe I could be 'The Human Torch,' if no one took it, already."
The agent opened his mouth to answer the volley of questions his young charge fired at him, but he was interrupted by a persistent beeping noise. Sighing, the agent eyed his pager, and ran a hand through his hair irately. "I'm sorry, something's come up, I'm being called away immediately. You're going to the Cavan house dormitories, they're just down the hall there. I'll be back as soon as I can, but until then...get started unpacking."
Matt looked crestfallen. "Hey, wait! You can't just leave! I don't even know what a Cavan is!"
