"Uh... yeah. So I'll pick you up at eight?"
"Yes, ah, eight sounds great! Heh, that rhymed."
"Yeah, it did. It was nice meeting you."
"You too! I'll see you tonight!"
"See you!"
Jonathan waved to a petite brunette as she dashed off, cheeks pink and smile wide. He was grinning too, and he folded the little note of lined paper with her phone number on it. So the cute girl finally worked up the courage to ask him out! He was cheering on the inside, and was half-tempted to do a victory dance.
The boy was a frequent visitor of the Study Hall. He came every day to read, work, and study, for school and for personal pleasure. He loved losing himself in fantasy worlds, epic mysteries, intriguing biographies... Discovering new facts and trivia was also entertaining, and the young man enjoyed learning new things.
And so because of his daily musings, he'd grown accustomed to his surroundings. And he'd begun to notice what was ordinary and what was unusual. The brunette started showing up about a month ago, and he hadn't taken much notice of her because her visits were erratic. But slowly those stops to the library grew less irregular and more routine, and he came to expect her arrival after eleven every day but Thursday. She'd stare at him, and blush profusely when he caught her staring, and sometimes he'd see her get up, start walking toward him, then rush right past, lips pressed in a straight line.
He often wondered if he should ask her out, but he wasn't sure how he felt about her. She was cute, to say the least. The girl had to be part Asian, because her eyes had an exotic slant and such perfect symmetry. She was also very short, and didn't reach his shoulders - over the past year, Jon had gone through quite the growth spurt, and now was the same height as Kenneth, and stood two inches taller than Dorian.
Anyway. Back to the story. Jon was pretty psyched. The girl, Lynette (her father was French), turned out to be not only pretty, but smart too. She was a bit socially awkward, like him, and they bumbled through a peculiar first conversation together quite admirably. Both were too hesitant to make a move, and both too unsure of themselves to make any presumptions. But they eventually agreed that it would be nice to hang out some time outside the Study Hall, and Jon asked her what she was up to tonight.
He sat back triumphantly in his chair and linked his fingers through his curls. Yeah, today was going to be a good day. Should he take her out to dinner? Or make her dinner? He should ask Elliot. Or Kellan. He didn't really think Ken or Dorian were the right people to ask. Dorian's thoughts of courtship were a little more... mature than Jon's, and Ken wasn't in a very good position to be offering any sort of dating advice. Yeah, he needed a girl's opinion. But his phone was back in his room so as not to distract him (hence the phone number written on paper), and he couldn't call any of his friends unless he walked all the way back to his dorm (inconveniently located across campus).
