Casey currently strolled along the wide meandering pathways that stretched across the campus. These surroundings were quite new to her and she found this time walking outside as time to adjust. It was nothing like home. Smirking to her herself, she wasn’t sure why home popped into her head; it had been a solid two years since she had stepped foot on her home turf and she’d rarely ever had the slightest thought of that place. Not that it held bad memories in any way.
Her stubbornness made her think of what this place could do for her future, what it could bring to her life and she was bound and determined to find out. Find those with more experience and study what she could of this world where she now knew she belonged. Why she couldn’t see that earlier on, she had no clue. Surely her shy demeanor played a big part in that. She wasn’t used to admitting she was different in any way, couldn’t think of a time when she wanted to admit to standing out in the crowd.
That shy part of her was what had her walking almost stupidly along the paths. She wasn’t ready to dive in head first. It was like in her head, she knew what she wanted, set her mind to a goal and could come up with a way to follow through. Her outward temperament, however, had other plans. A timeline of its own and right now, it was stalling. Crossing her arms over her ribcage, she looked at the building; this University she’d decided to become a part of and sighed. Having no choice, nowhere to turn, she blocked the sounds of the surrounding people out and moved forward. She had chosen this new path for her life and now she had to jump, had to take the plunge and find out what awaited her on the other side.

It was beautiful today, a cause for celebration amongst some of the University students. Among the celebratory folk were the Ashley twins, who were not-so-subtly cheating in a game of volleyball. Their group tied a string from one tree to another to form the net, and the girls were unsurprisingly on the same team. Though neither was particularly skilled in the sport itself, they both possessed the ah... 'techniques' to get the ball from point A to point B.
"That was totally unnatural!" One boy complained after the twins gave each other a congratulatory high-five, "The ball was going under, and you guys made it jump higher at the last second! Cheaters!"
But the accusation was met with lighthearted laughter. The game continued, until the ball bounced right out of their play area and cross paths with Casey. Roxanne lifted her hand, but Chloe caught her sister's wrist before she could use her telekinesis. Chloe waved to the girl, a welcoming smile on her face.
"Pass the ball?" She shouted, waving once more. Roxanne studied the stranger curiously. Chloe was always looking to meet new people; she liked to learn what their Gifts were and how to control that power within herself. Roxy couldn't care less - she had a big group of friends already and didn't mind meeting others. She sometimes came off a bit strong, which repelled possible new friends away.
"We won't bite," Chloe promised Casey, and the boy on the opposing team laughed at a joke someone else made.

Casey paused when the ball came rolling across her path, reaching a foot out to bring it to a stop. She turned looking to the side curiously when she heard the voice of another young girl. Nodding at her request, she bent down, gently scooping up the ball and tossing it to the friendly blonde who had asked. “Sure.” She said in a soft slightly shy voice, a small smile on her lips.
Taking a step towards the makeshift volleyball court, she looked it over with a slight nod; nothing like making do with what you had just to have a good time. Her eyes gazed from one person to the next before she opened her mouth. “Mind another player?” she asked fully expecting to be shot down. No one enjoyed playing a game with a stranger, but she felt the need to ask. It was one of her favorite sports, besides soccer, and she really thought it would do a world in loosening her nerves some, make her feel more comfortable.

Roxanne just shrugged at Casey's request. Chloe was thrilled Casey had asked, "Not at all!" She chimed, catching the ball with a grin. They weren't playing with even numbers anyway; the other team had three guys, which might seem unfair if the girls didn't have the crazy advantage they did. As Casey came to join the team, Chloe passed the girl the ball.
"They hit it out. It's our serve. You take the shot," It was technically Chloe's turn, but she didn't mind passing up a serve to the new girl. If it had been Roxy, it wouldn't have even crossed her mind to offer. The twins made room for Casey to serve, stepping a little wider than they usually would in case the girl turned out to be a disaster.
"Hit it to the short guy," Roxy murmured over her shoulder from her spot at the front of the 'net', "He can't receive worth shit!" Chloe scolded her sister but didn't seem to disagree with her statement. The 'short guy' was at the back, acting as defence.

Casey grinned when her offer of finishing out the game was accepted and she walked forward onto the field. Gazing around, she noticed the other blonde, who seemed to have a big mouth, didn’t seem too thrilled for another player but the nicer one kept her in check. She kicked off her shoes, preferring to play in her bare feet, and shook the light sweat shirt off her shoulders and onto the ground to reveal well muscled arms and a thin frame covered by a light blue tank top. Nothing like a nice game of volleyball to keep her in shape. Luckily, her red hair was already pulled back into a pony tail so she didn’t have to worry about that.
Taking the ball back when she was asked to serve, Casey stepped to the outer corner, smirking as the other girls gave her lots of room for messing this up. Spending all her school years playing sports gave her more technique than having to use her gifts to win a game. At the request to aim for the shorter guy, she looked over the string at the three boys and nodded, thinking also that the shorter boy wouldn’t be too athletic. Tossing the ball into the air, she jumped and let the palm of her hand connect with the white sphere, staring the guy down as it went sailing over the “net”.

Casey may as well have spiked the ball. The poor guy was distracted, staring at Casey, and if he was a crap receiver before, he didn't stand a chance in the state he was in now.
"Woo!" The girls cheered, and Roxy seemed suddenly much more welcoming as she offered Casey a high-five. "That was insane! Respect!" Neither of the twins could properly do an overhand serve. They usually resorted to the underhand style, only switching it up when they wholly intended to use their telekinesis to cheat.
Speaking of which. Chloe was now the distant one, studying Casey curiously while Roxanne congratulated the girl on a killer serve. Her silence caught Roxanne's attention, and she excused herself to consult with her sister.
"What's up?"
"I don't know. I didn't feel any different when she joined us," Chloe explained, "I think... I think she might be human."
"We're all human," Roxy argued, but she understood what Chloe meant. She shrugged, "Whatever. She's got a good arm."
And their brief meeting ended as the boys passed the ball back to Casey so she could serve again. They'd switched their positions so their shortest player was no longer in the back.

A bright smile attached itself to Casey’s lips at the surprise from the girl on her team. It made her feel more happy and welcome and she greatly returned the high five she was offered, with a light laugh. Nodding in an understanding way when the girl went to talk to her sister, she watched them curiously, wondering what was so serious as to put a pause to a good game; wondering in the back of her head if it was her they were talking about.
Casey was aware before she joined the game that the two girls were using their powers to get a good start on winning the game, or maybe they enjoyed cheating, maybe they just couldn’t stand to lose, Casey really didn’t know. She herself didn’t really enjoy using her powers, and wouldn’t think of using them to cheat at something. In the past, she’d lived such a normal life, that not using her powers was normal to her and only thought of using them in extreme situations.
As the girls brought their conversations to an end, Casey, tossed the ball in the air, and eyed the new line up of the boys. “Alright girls, get ready.” She warned and served the ball in the same style as before, to the player in the back, this time hoping for a return, hoping for some action, and hoping these other two girls could play decently well even if they had to use their powers. As the boy in the back returned the ball, Casey snuck forward. Even though the ball wasn’t directed to her, we was on the look for a set up, maybe even a position for a nice spike into the boys’ face.

This boy, who was much taller than the last receiver, actually seemed to know how to play volleyball. He backed up and lifted his arms, wrists locked together, so the powerful spike connected with the inside of his forearms. The ball made a loud smacking noise upon impact, and went flying wide of the net. This time the group didn't have a friendly stranger to ask to retrieve their ball. So Roxanne sighed over-dramatically and lifted her hand in the ball's direction. With a lift of her finger and a flick of her wrist, the ball came soaring back onto the field. And slammed right into the tall guy's chest.
"Hey!" He protested, and Roxanne giggled unashamedly. Chloe rolled her eyes while the guy rubbed the point of contact. She understood why Roxanne had seemingly needlessly attacked him. His name was Warren, and he'd been spreading rumours that Roxanne kissed him. Harmless really, but Roxanne didn't appreciate the fiction. This was her small piece of vindication, and Warren seemed to realize this, because he didn't complain after looking at Roxy's face. Whatever expression was on it gave him pause before he gently returned the ball to their side of the court.
"Nice spike," Roxanne added at last as the ball sailed toward Casey. She was smiling again, as though nothing had happened.
Chloe still seemed a bit preoccupied, studying Casey. She wasn't being overly rude or obvious about it, but she clearly wasn't paying attention to where the ball was. Warren's aim was a little off, and instead of naturally falling into Casey's hands, it veered off course toward the blonde. Roxanne was a little more on the ball, if you'll excuse the pun, and pushed both her hands toward her sister, at an upward angle. She looked like a tai chi practitioner, sending her energy away from her body. And she was. The ball struck the energy just inches above Chloe's head, and rolled off, no harm done. Chloe blinked and look down at the ball at her feet.
Instead of making a big theatrical deal of nearly being pegged in the head with a volleyball, Chloe used her foot as a shovel and popped it up to Casey. "Okay. Let's go for three in a row!" She encouraged, back to her old self.

Casey watched the scene between Roxanne and the boy with curiosity and chuckled at the sight of her nailing him with the volleyball. When he threw it back over the net, she knew it was coming nowhere near her, and almost opened her mouth to warn the girl if was heading in her direction but her sister took care of that for her. Casey fully noticed the girl was watching her, and wondered why in the world she was so interested. Easily catching the ball when it was popped back to her, she got into place and stared the boys down across the net.
Seeing as the other girl was having so much fun with her powers and not even really caring about it, Casey decided maybe she could too. She served the ball, right back to the same tall guy, a perfect aim which would have led to an easy return on his part. But at the last minute with a nod of her head, the ball veered sharply and smacked the shorter guy right in the side of the head. Casey smirked with a sense of accomplishment and just gazed over the string as the kid rubbed the side of his face, not knowing what in the hell hit him, the other two boys complaining.

"Roxy!" Warren complained loudly, and Roxanne held up her hands.
"It wasn't me," She promised, and although Roxanne was capable of lying, her delayed reaction to the accusation made her words sound promising. She shot a look at Chloe, wondering if her sister had been involved in the attack. But Chloe was staring intently at Casey. So Roxanne shifted her focus and gave Casey a raise of her brow, clearly asking if Casey was responsible. It didn't look disapproving. It looked... like Roxanne may have found a new best friend.
"If you guys are going to keep cheating, we quit," warned the third boy, not seeming impressed. He was the only one who hadn't been hit yet, and he seemed to be fearing for his safety. Roxanne snorted and waved him off.
"You sound as though you don't like balls to the face there, Stephan," She jabbed, which set the boys off into accusing one another of being gay, etc, etc. Eventually they just gave up, being the poor sports they were, and abandoned the girls to their own devices.
Chloe turned to Casey, "You have telekinesis too?" That would explain the lack of change to her power cache. Did that mean Casey only had telekinesis, or was she a pyro too? Could she project shields? Her excitement began to grow while Roxanne untied the string from the trees.

Casey just chuckled when Roxanne raised her brow, obviously silently asking if this was all her fault. Her chuckle grew into a full laugh as the boys argued and she watched them intently, her hands on her hips. “Guys just can’t stand it when girls beat their asses,” she mused, the first real sentence of this whole get together which made Casey fully aware of how quiet she actually was as a person.
Casey nodded when the quieter blonde asked about her powers. “Yeah, sure do,” she answered vocally and walked forward to help Roxy take down the single string that had served as their net. “Well girls, this was really fun. Made my whole day.” Smiling in a friendly manner, she gazed from one girl to the other and then to where the boys had wondered off to. Maybe this place would turn out pretty fun and not be as boring and simplistic as she had once thought.

Roxanne laughed outright at Casey's comment. Chloe let escape a giggle. It was so true. The boys taking off proved her statement, but the girls didn't seem upset by their departure. When Casey confirmed she had telekinesis, Chloe grinned.
"That explains it!" She grinned, and Roxanne laughed.
" 'I think she might be human', " Roxanne quoted, making Chloe blush for her mistake. "Look at this girl. There's nothing normal about her. She's fantastic!" She turned to Casey, "I'm glad you had fun. Too bad those boys are all losers."
"Not all of them," Chloe argued, and Roxanne leaned in to explain.
"Her ex-boyfriend Mark was the hot one," Chloe shot Roxanne a look, but Roxanne didn't seem to notice. That, or she didn't care.

Casey laughed fully enjoying the girl talk and being able to have some real fun for once. She looked curiously at the girls when Roxy quoted some words. “Me, human?” she asked, tilting her head. “No way,” she said simply though there were times in her life where she did wish she was just a normal human, with no huge secrets to keep. “It’s Casey, by the way.” Offering an introduction wasn’t quite a normal thing for her. She never really talked to anyone enough to be able to offer them her name, but this time felt right.
When the ex-boyfriend was brought up, Casey turned to the direction in which the boys had left to. “Not bad,” she said turning back to Chloe. The boy was pretty good looking but definitely not Casey’s type. She had a tendency to get involved with older guys and she wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was time she looked more closely at guys’ her age, though right now she was not in the mood for looking. “What made you two break up? Look like a cute couple.”

"It's nice to meet you Casey, I'm Roxanne," The first blonde reciprocated, "and this is my sister, Chloe. Welcome to the Place Everyone Needs Unnecessary Mentoring Being Really Abnormal. Also known as Penumbra."
Chloe rolled her eyes; the acronym was something they'd come up with together when they were applying for their first year. They knew they didn't really need to go to University; they had their own plans after high school. But they'd get certain discounts being students in the industry they wanted to break into. And they enjoyed learning (at least Chloe did), about new and exciting subjects.
When Casey pried into Chloe's personal life, she winced, but she didn't become defensive. Instead she answered the question. "It was stupid, really. He wanted to move out of the University dormitories and into an apartment... with me."
"He was going too fast, and Chloe wasn't ready for that," Roxanne summarized, and Chloe involuntarily watched the boys disappear into the school's interior. "Anyway! I'm craving some pizza. Or lasagna. Or something else with a lot of cheese. Anyone else down?"
Chloe didn't answer, and instead looked to Casey.

Casey listened to Chloe’s explanation for the break up and raised a brow, not understanding what was so bad about that. “Really?” she asked, her mind almost in a state of shock when Roxanne mentioned that he was moving too fast for Chloe’s liking. “I’m sorry, but I don’t see why that would break a couple up,” she said simply, hoping the girl wouldn’t take it the wrong way. Casey would probably have jumped at that kind of opportunity, moving in with someone she cared about.
Lowering her head, Casey got really quiet, thinking back on the past and opened her mouth again. “It was probably a smart move on your part.” Biting her lip, she took a few steps towards the building when Roxanne mentioned food. “I’m so down.” Casey agreed with a smile. “I’m starving, and something cheesy sounds so good right now.” Chuckling, she looked to Chloe for her own opinion, whether she was hungry or not.
