"Sometimes you have to jump and hope you land on the ground." Chloris picked up Possum, rubbing his back. The ferret curled on her lap, watching Kolton with beady red eyes. She wasn't sure why she was trying so hard. She decided that it was because she was just an amazingly good Samaritan.
Chloris wasn't sure whether or not to say her next words -- they were the truth, she felt, but sometimes the truth was hard to take. "You're only hurting her by trying to distance yourself. Your parents are dead and you're her only family. Since you're avoiding her, she probably feels abandoned. If it were me, I'd be happy to know that my brother still cared."
"For the necklace problem, perhaps you could call ahead and tell her not to wear it, or at least wear a scarf or something over it." She shrugged a shoulder. Possum scuttled back over to Kolton, placing his paws on the vampire's arm.

Kolton smirked down at teh ferret. I'll think about it. he said and ruffled teh creature's fur. Right now I think we need to get you inside somewhere. he said putting the ferret on his shoulder as he stood up and held a hand out for her.

Thinking about things and putting them into action were vastly different. You could think about building schools for underprivileged ferret owners, or you could do it. Chloris was about to respond, to argue that point, but decided just to swallow the fact that this was one argument that she shouldn't push. Besides, as the old quote went: It is dangerous business to be always meddling.
She took his hand and lifted herself up. "Inside somewhere?" Chloris inquired. She looked up at the sky nervously. "Don't want any flaming vampires."

He chuckled. There's still a few hours before that's a problem. But... I smell rain coming. It's been cloudy evening. he said as he turned to lead her towards his place. It was close. Just two blocks away. And teh rain was coming fast. COme on. It's going to start any minute and my apartment is just aroun dteh corner. he said grabbing Possum and tucking him in close to his chest and he gripped Cloris' hand tighter and urged her to run faster.

Rain? She quite liked rain. She would have stood there reflecting on the rain all night had the grip on her hand not tightened, and had he not started running fullspeed to his apartment. Chloris squeaked, trying to keep up with him so that her arm wasn't torn off.
Chloris hated running, walking fast, and generally anything that involved an increase heart rate. She ran along with him, trying not to stumble over her feet.
How crazy was he? He was a vampire, therefore he could run faster than humans. She was pretty sure that there were several times during that run where her feet weren't even touching the ground anymore.

KOlton often forgot that he could run faster that normal people now. They reached his building door and he punched in teh key code and puche dthe door open just as lightening struck nearby. Get in. he said to her. He never much liked teh rain. Though Amber always loved to play in it. Besides. a small animal like a ferret shouldn't be in a thunder storm. Once she was inside he shut and locked the door behind them then led her up the stairs and down teh first floor hall to his apartment door. He unlocked it and let her go in first. There was one window in the lviing room and one in the bedroom. Both were boarded over and covered with heavy thick curtains so teh sun wouldn't leak in.

She looked around the apartment, standing there awkwardly. Her arm was sore, her heart was racing, and her legs felt like they were about to fall off. Running a marathon had never been high on her todo list.
Chloris pulled her coat tighter, and walked over to the window. "So you have a really strong sense of smell... I bet gym class was hell for you." She felt the texture of the curtains, and then turned her attention back to Kolton.
"How'd you turn into a vampire?"

He locked his door and went over to his small wet bar and poored himself a bit of blood left over from the last time he'd gone to the hospital and mixed a bit of scotch in it. It was a graduation party. Well, sort of. My friends and I hit a few clubs that night and I was really drunk. he sipped his mixture and walked over to sit on his black couch. Oh I'm sry did you want something to drink? I have water or some juice, I keep it the fridge. NOt sure why though. he said. Most things tasted very bland to him now, but sometimes he was just tired of the blood.

Chloris decided not to chide him about underage drinking. Normally when teenagers got drunk they didn't die and turn into bloodsucking fiends. She watched him drink the blood, poorly concealing her fascination. Blood - and soy sauce - had always tasted like the two most terrible things in the world. And she had licked Possum, too.
"I'm fine." She answered, sitting on the floor. She took her stuffed rabbit out, tossing him up and down. Possum scuttled out from behind Kolton's couch to grab her rabbit, and then ran off with it.
"Were you gifted before you were turned?"

KOlton took anothe rsip and shook his head. No. Just my sister. She'd left for the academy when she was 11. We'd stayed in touch. I'd go see her. Then that night had happened and I couldn't face her. he paused for a moment in thought. There was this guy at teh last club my friends and I went to. He was a bit strange, red eyes and a pale complextion. My friends dared me to punch him, just to see if he was a s hard as he looked. And I did. And he was. The guy got mad and attacked me. I managed to get out the door trying to get away. But he was right on me. I ended up dying in an alley. I had tried to take a shortcut back home. When I woke up as a vampire the next night he was there. He explained what had happened. He'd lost control because some guy behind me had just given his girlfriend a rose. That's his weakness. I think it was his sister's name or something. He said his name was Cian Dax. He tried to convince me to come with him back to teh academy to learn how to control myself. But I refused because of my sister. I was afriad she'd reject me as we've already discussed. he sighed and leaned forward as he drained his glass and set it on the coffee table. he stayed with me for a few days. Then left. I haven't seen my maker since.

She walked over to him and sat down with him, leaning her head on his shoulder. "That bites. No pun intended," Chloris added as an afterthought. She scooted away from him, leaning over to get Possum.
Chloris couldn't fathom being ashamed to tell her family something. She had met a lot of people during her years at the Academy who had been abused by their families, or whose families had just died. "Why do you live so close to your sister if you don't want her to know?"

I've been trying to work up the nerve to tell her. PLus I've been hearing rumors about some Red Rose organization forming. And I want to be close in case she needs me. he said. Watching her. Her scent had invaded his senses that second she was laying on his shoulder and she pulled away all too soon.

Red Rose? Sounded very... very.. "Are they a botany group?" She asked, head tilted. Possum tilted his head as well. Botanists. You never know when they may sic man-eating Venus flytraps on you.
She scooted closer again, putting Possum back on his shoulder. "That's very noble of you, but wouldn't you have to get involved in her life if she gets involved with them?"

No they're not botanists. And yeah, i would. And I'll deal with it if it comes to that. HOpefully it won't though. he said. When she moved closer he took in a breath and smiled. She smeeled good. Sweet and cinnaminy. Without thinking he turned sideways on teh couch and reached a hand up, sliding his fingers slowly through her hair. It was as soft as it looked and it sent a flash of desire into his brown eyes.

What could be worse than botanists? Death by botany would be the worst way to die. She could either be choked by a plant or bored to death. "Are they bad people?" She inquired, with a raised eyebrow. Chloris couldn't phrase the question any less subjectively - evil was in the eye of the beholder.
Her shoulders stiffened when he started running his fingers through her hair. Chloris eyed him warily. She scooted to the other end of the couch, hugging her knees protectively against her chest. Chloris would have made a snarky remark had her throat not have been dry.
"Amber wouldn't get involved in anything bad." Chloris changed the subject, her voice cracking a little. "I don't think. I don't really know her, so I can't...say for certain.."
