By now the director had grown used to Kara's reactions. They were odd, yes, but they were almost growing predictable. Who was he kidding? You could predict anything, given enough information. That was part of the beauty of science.
The director smiled and stretched his arms wide again, as if he were about to hug Kara.
"I'm sure we can get you some books. I believe that we've got a few copies of popular literature around here. Ever heard of Twilight? I think we have a copy of that somewhere. I'll call Stephens and have him check."
The director lifted up his arm, and talked into his watch. It was a hushed conversation, and Kara was too far away to really pick up anything. Even if she'd moved closer, all she'd get to hear is gibberish about checking, and a bit about Twilight.
That situated, the Director lowered his arm, nodding to Kara.
"Noticed you shivering. Stephens will be bringing in a blanket and some pillows. I'm afraid all we can provide is the table," he indicated it, "since you're effectively a prisoner."
He smiled, then nodded one last time. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have other work to do."
He headed for the door, and it slid open to let him out, and Stephens in. The well-muscled man walked over to the table, dropping a thick blanket, two sterile pillows, and a shiny hardback copy of Twilight. He then looked at Kara, raising the area where his eyebrow would be.

He was actually giving her a book. Correction, Stephens was giving her a book. As the director left, Kara gave him a sneer that lifted her lips like an animal about to growl, but curled enough at the corner and showed just enough teeth to pass as a 'friendly' farewell. When Stephens placed her prisoner equipment on the table, Kara lifted the thick tome and weighed it in her hands experimentally.
She definitely wasn't strong enough to whack the book at Stephens and knock him out. So instead of even considering it, she put it down and set up her own personal nook away from the ugly, big-ass, barrel-chested mamoth staring her down. Propping one pillow up against the corner, and the other on the floor for her butt, Kara flopped into it with the blanket and book and cracked it open to the first page.

It would be morning before anyone bothered with Kara again. The director would return, flanked by several scientists, each one intrigued by Kara, several of them armed with needles and sadistic grins.
The director wasted no time in awakening his new favorite test subject, his tone pleasant, "Good morning Kara, I hope you did well."
Whether or not he actually cared about her wellbeing hardly mattered. His tone didn't convey his feelings one way or the other. And you could ascertain anything behind his practiced smile. Even Kara wouldn't sense anything beyond friendliness and just plain happiness.
"A few of my colleagues wanted to do a few last minute tests, and I'm afraid we're going to have to take some more blood," he chuckled, shaking his head. "That's the problem with scientists sometimes. As blood thirsty as a bunch of vampires."
He waved his colleagues forward, and they began their tests.
"Once they're finished I'll contact Stephens and a few others, and you'll lead them to your little school. And you can all have a gay ole time."

Kara was on the last paragraph of her chapter, and when the director walked in (for she could feel him coming), she held up one finger. Finishing her paragraph, she folded the corner of the page leading to the next chapter and closed the novel. She was nearly finished it. One more night in a hard corner ought to do it. It was interesting, in a 'so that's what these people think vampires are like'.
Using the walls to help her to her feet, Kara stretched her arms, shook out her legs, and rolled her neck. Some more tests. Some more blood. Just lovely.
"What happened to the last vat of blood you took?" Kara demanded, not at all liking the idea of relinquishing more of herself to these scientists with their probes and needles. "You didn't feed it to Stephens, did you?"
She stood still as the other scientists approached her, forcing a calm over the room and over herself so she wouldn't freak out and try to fight back (because it was her natural reaction, and she knew already she would lose that battle). As they began the tests, her eye twitched when a needle slipped into her arm, but other than that she gave no reaction.
"So, have you read Twilight, doctor?" Kara asked, almost conversationally.

The scientists went about their tasks with practiced ease. Inserting needles and taking reading was a matter of course for them. That the subject happened to be a young girl did disturb a few of them, but they remained silent. Research came before all for these dedicated intellectuals.
"Oddly enough, Stephens didn't want any. I offered but," the director shrugged, then chuckled. "Tests have a way of damaging blood, and unfortunately this is what happened to the samples you previously gave us. Now we're in need of more. Fortunately we have a ready supply."
He was quiet as the scientists continued their tests, working with calm efficiency. Wouldn't be much longer now, and the team would be sent out. Just thinking about so many potential subjects made the director smile.
"Yes, I have read Twilight, I found it amusing, though poorly constructed."

Kara just nodded at his thoughts on the book. Strange, how similarly they thought. A deep breath later she was good to speak again.
"My friend Alice isn't very happy," She murmured just loud enough to hear. She flinched when another unbidden needle was shoved into her skin, but forced the calm to stay with her for as long as she needed it. Subtly she introduced the need for haste into the scientists, hoping that they were professional enough not to hurt her. She just wanted these tests to be over and done with, and although she didn't trust them to make this experience painless, she tried to assure herself that they'd be careful. They wouldn't want to damage their precious test subject, now would they?
When the scientists decided they'd finished, Kara jerked away and zipped her jacket all the way to the throat, rolling down the sleeves to cover as much skin as possible. Her flesh belonged on a heroine addict. She rubbed the microscopic holes tenderly.
"Off to the Cullens now?"
Her eyes narrowed and her chin lifted.

It was interesting how closely Kara's Gift mimicked the characters of the text. Of course, she was less "Alice" and more "Jasper." But that was probably the allusion she was trying to make. It certainly wasn't lost on the director, but he simply ignored it, figuring it not worth his time to pursue.
"Something like that," agreed the director, smiling. By now most of the other scientists had finished their work, and all were clamoring eagerly to one another. Thus distracted, most of them left the room.
One woman, most likely in her thirties hesitated a moment, studying Kara closely. "Are you okay?" she asked.
The director glared at the insubordinate scientist, stepping forward.
The woman glared at him over her shoulder, then gave Kara a sympathetic look. She couldn't stay any longer though, not with the director. So she left, though she fired one last glare at the director's back.
"Now, you're free to head back the way you came. I'm certain you know the way by now. Stephens and several others are waiting for you upstairs. Including a few dedicated scientists," the director smiled and waved again. "It's a shame we most likely won't see each other again. Just when we were starting to bond."

Kara wasn't 'trying' to make an allusion. She'd meant Alice, for what Alice was. Screw Jasper, she made that connection immediately and had actually found herself able to relate to a character. But Jasper was not important here, and nor was she. Alice was the one who wasn't very happy.
But then the unbidden sympathy caught her attention before the woman made a move toward her, and Kara's eyes landed on her. At her question, Kara blinked. She shrugged, her brows furrowed in confusion.
"As okay as a girl who's been injected with who knows what can be."
When the director stepped up, Kara's gaze stayed on the woman who was now glaring at him. She might be... useful. When her attention fell on Kara again, she gave a frightened little smirk back before the woman turned. That was when Kara pumped regret and compassion into her, the connection much stronger because of the eye-contact she'd initiated upon feeling the woman's remorse.
When the man spoke, Kara looked at his chin. She nodded at his words, slipped her coat on again and zipped it while hurrying out the lab door. She followed after the female scientist.
"Is there another way out?" Kara whispered, slowing down to walk next to her.

The head director watched Kara leave, smiling to himself. As soon as she was out of sight, he turned and looked to the computer screen. Reams of data scrolled down, looking like something from the Matrix. The harsh light of the computer screen reflected off the director's smile.
"Yes, only one way out."
OoC: aaaaaand, I'm calling it there. We can move on to the actual invasion now ><
