Serenity followed her towards the main building, thinking it would be better to follow her and continue to make friends than to sit there alone, or go back to her room alone and not have any friends again tomorrow. She smiled and walked next to Ghost. "I think coffee would be good right now. It'll make me warm."
She chuckled softly, no real reason as her joke wasn't really funny, but this feeling of community with Ghost was making her feel happier than she'd felt earlier in the day. "So where are we going to get the coffee?"
She looked around as they walked, observing any of the other students that were still out in the chilly air. It was a beautiful night, the air crisp, the world calm...at least for now. One could never predict what was going to happen in this world. She looked over to her new companion and thought about how often she'd cycled through friends, how often she'd walked these grounds alone, how often she'd sat by the same lake and thought about life and how complicated it could get.
She sighed, her breath pluming slightly in the air.

Serenity, thankfully, smiled at the idea and followed her. Ghost felt a rush of happiness in her stomach. Her fingers clenched tightly into poor Tokala's little body, but she was sure he'd forgive her. "I think coffee would be good right now. It'll make me warm." She'd caught up at that point and Ghost looked over at her. She couldn't help nodding and smiling back. She actually liked being with this dark-haired stranger.
It was so odd. Before, she would never had even tried to associate with other people for more than a little while. If she had to sit next to someone in a public school, she'd be politely cool. Sure she'd eventually gone to a few parties, but all of those times she was more likely to dance and dump than try to follow up, and most of the time she didn't see any of those people again. She got by on her minimal socialization, but then again... It wasn't a very happy time, she reminded herself. You didn't even like it.
Being here... Having Mom and Dad send her toys like Tokala and maybe some spending money later on for clothes... Being by the lake and watching the sun set and feeling the warm breeze and soft grass... Talking to this girl who could have just passed her up and not given her a second thought... Ghost wondered if she actually was happy. She decided that if this wasn't happiness, then at least she was enjoying herself. Serenity had laughed lightly, and then continued. "So where are we going to get the coffee?"
She looked around expectantly. And Ghost followed her gaze for a moment. There were a couple other kids out as the light faded. Some were couples, stargazing as much as they could; some were just friends, walking and slowly chatting; still others were by themselves, perhaps with a steaming beverage and a notebook or sketchpad. She thought she saw a few practicing their Gifts. Maybe vampires were heading out. "Well in the mornings when I have a class I go the the Antechamber for breakfast. They serve free coffee there so..."
She noticed Serenity was watching her. Instead of holding her gaze, Ghost simply smiled at her and then looked out again back towards the Academy. There was a boy there impressing some girl by making fire on his hands, and Ghost grinned. What people will do for each other...

Serenity nodded. "I've never been there before. If you keep going back then they must have good coffee so sure, we can go there." She smiled and shoved her hands deep into her pockets, mad at herself for not bringing a jacket, but she hadn't known it would be so cold out. She shook her head.
"Ghost, did you know it was going to be this cold?" She asked, clenching and unclenching her fists inside her pockets. "I thought it would be kind of moderately chilly but his is like, jacket weather." She sighed and scrunched her shoulders, noticing a boy playing with fire to impress a girl standing near him. She chuckled. "Now that's a useful gift on a night like tonight."

As they walked along the expansive stretch of grassy grounds, Ghost noticed that both visibility and temperature began to drop. The stars sparkled dully as they began showing through the sparse clouds. She looked over to see the pale face of Serenity nodding. Ghost wondered if she practically glowed, being as white as she was. Even her blouse, pastel blue, would be easily seen even in low light.
That is, unless she made herself invisible.
"I've never been there before," Serenity began, "If you keep going back then they must have good coffee so sure, we can go there." Ghost nodded back, acknowledging. "It's decent," she replied. "I mean, it's generic office coffee, but it's not bad. They have a nice variety of creamers and sometimes they use flavored coffee." Ghost felt it unneccessary to mention that she was unable to stomach black coffee, and she wasn't about to delve into how she'd managed to start drinking the bitter beverage.
The darkness was beginning to stifle her. Her heart stuttered for a moment. It's fine, she said to herself, forcing her eyes to watch the flickering light ahead of them, to gaze at the buzzing lights lining the paths and on the outer walls of the building. You brought yourself out here in the first place. Deal with it. Though she mentally chastised her fearfulness, she was indifferent on the outside and watched as Serenity shook her head. "Ghost, did you know it was going to be this cold?" she asked, and looked about frozen. Ghost hadn't, but despite this and her growing anxiety, she felt a rush of happiness. Serenity had said her... her name? As if they were legitimately friends...
Maybe they were. Ghost giggled. "Nope, sorry," she said, but waited as Serenity continued. "I thought it would be kind of moderately chilly but this is like, jacket weather." Ghost laughed aloud at this, which helped to stay the clenching of her chest. "Now that's a useful Gift on a night like tonight," she chuckled, commenting on the flighty glimpses of flame ahead of them. Ghost nodded.
"I totally know what you mean," she said as they grew close to the building. "I can't stand the cold. But it was nice earlier, so I figured it might not get so frigid." The doors leading inside were open, and light spilled out, along with a lazy wave of warmth like a gentle breeze. She slowly softened her tight grip on Tokala, who slumped in her fingers as if lifeless. The light quickly stayed her fears. "You wanna go in?"
